To accommodate the growing student numbers, The Practice were appointed to design a building containing a cafeteria, student social space and student services. The building would also double as an exam hall.
The cafeteria is located on the ground floor and is served by a commercial kitchen and the high level of servicing required is housed in the first floor roof space. The cafeteria opens up to a south facing terrace with views over the playing fields and the city beyond.
Design cues were taken from the original school building, Northbrook, albeit the building is given its own identity in its form and the selection of materials. Internally, a light, airy atmosphere is created whilst using robust materials to withstand the rigours of student use.
Since construction, various adaptations have been undertaken by The Practice to allow it to meet the changing requirements of the college. Recently, the front terrace has been extended and a canopy has been built above (to specialist design) to provide an all-weather cover, and an extension to the Kitchen has just been completed to increase the area of kitchen and storage available and to provide improved staff facilities.
