The scheme comprises a new 64 place day nursery built adjacent Vicarage Farm Business Park.
The building reflects the adjacent existing farm buildings and is traditional in form and finish which was a requirement of the local authority. The main two storey body of the building reflects the local black timber clad barns, and the single storey classrooms wrap around it and appear as more recent extensions with simpler detailing. This gives the impression that the building has evolved over time.
The Baby Room is located on the first floor whereas the other classrooms open up onto the external play space from the ground floor. A large oak tree dominates the centre of the play space and provides shade as well as a strong visual presence. It impacts upon the siting of the Nursery and also obscures the view of the building from the main road, permitting only angled glimpses between undergrowth and canopy.
