The Practice was commissioned to design a development of eight flats in a four storey block whose site is on the cusp of an existing industrial zone and traditional residential area.
The site is currently occupied by a two-storey industrial unit which is in a poor state of repair and is partly clad in asbestos sheets that requires extensive remedial works.
The solution provides 2 flats per floor, accessed from a central glazed staircase. The main bulk of the building is on the first three storeys and contain strong red brick surrounds with render and glass infill and balconies to offer the small areas of private external space. The upper floor is set back from all sides to reduce the bulk and is clad in zinc.
