Southampton University Hospitals Trust elected to expand and refurbish their operating theatre suite which deals with day surgery. As part of the expansion strategy, an additional operating theatre was required.
The project demanded extensive consultation with clinical staff to develop the briefing documentation, room data sheets and layouts, followed by continual liaison to ensure patient services were maintained throughout the construction period. To facilitate this, the scheme was broken down into a number of phases.
The project was designed to meet high clinical standards, the demands of a modern operating department and the necessity to transform the formerly institutional environment into a more lively and attractive unit. The bold use of colour, patterns and soft furnishings were used sensitively to ensure a complementary transition between new building works and the old department.
