The original project on the site comprised a change of use permission from office to children’s day nursery plus some internal space planning.

Since occupation, the nursery proved to be very popular and the internal rooms were further re-planned to maximise the space utilisation. To enable this to happen, a new office building was commissioned to accommodate the nursery group’s administrative staff plus their roving support team, which has freed up space in the existing building to accommodate more children. It also formed a training facility, in conjunction with the adjacent stable building which was also converted.

The new building is intended to give the impression of a garden pavilion, sitting on the edge of the lawn of the adjacent large detached house. Accordingly, it does not try to compete with the heavy masonry forms of the existing buildings. It touches the ground lightly and is contemporary in detail and clad primarily in horizontal timber. The large areas of glazing maximises the use of natural light and ventilation, and the veranda which runs around two sides of the building reduces solar gain and glare.

The building also offers additional security by overlooking the visitors car park and side access to the gardens and children’s play space.
