The new house is located in the back garden of an existing house that the Practice had extended and redeveloped in 2015 for the same client.

The site is in Shawford, Hampshire which mainly comprises large, detached houses on extensive plots. Some of the nearby houses had been demolished to make way for small developments of developer houses and the next-door neighbour had been replaced with 3 large, detached properties.

The clients wished to retain the existing house, make better use of the large garden and move into the new house which would be more efficient to run and designed to their exacting requirements.

The planning approval process was protracted and necessitated adjustments to the proposals to ensure it could not been seen from the highway and the scale was reduced in order to secure a permission.

The building mass is split into two areas, a single storey element with snug and office and a two storey section containing the family room, utility and playroom on the ground floor with bedrooms above. It is linked by the main entrance a lobby from with views front and back and rooflights above, flooding it with light.

Due to the proximity to the neighbouring property, the windows to the first floor face westwards to prevent overlooking and the main reception areas face south towards the garden.

The building is highly insulated and is timber framed for speed of construction. It is generally finished in render with areas of timber cladding to the ground floor. The first floor bedrooms are built into the roof with metal clad dormer windows to maximise usable space whilst minimising height.

The building uses an air source heat pump linked to an underfloor heating system to both floors, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and includes photovoltaic panels to the south facing roof.

The photographs were taken prior to the soft landscaping and interior fitting out being completed.
